Wildlife
From Duke Wiki
Three principle animals dominate the Duke University ecosystem. ducks, squirrels and cats. Regardless of the supposed mathematical relationship between the three, their numbers seem to mutually grow in a more-or-less exponential fashion from year to year, and now the three species sit happily atop the food chain looking down on the denizens of the university. But how did this happen? And where can they be found?
[edit] Ducks
Ducks can be found wandering any green portion of the campus, though they particular like Main West and the Duke Gardens. Two Ducks in particular, Harry and Misty both seem to enjoy hanging out on the path from the West Campus Bus Stop to Perkins Library.
[edit] Squirrels
Squirrels frequent all areas of campus and tend to be very fat. Although their only known predators are the multitudes of "feral" cats that also roam the Gothic Wonderland. A rare sighting are the hawks that attempt to capture the squirrels. It was witnessed on a fair fall day in 2006 on the chapel quad in front of the bus stop. As some students tossed a frisbee on the quad a hawk swooped down from on top of the Alpine bagel building and nearly caught a squirrel. The squirrel had jumped into a trash can and when it tried to run out the hawk tried again, launching from a nearby car. The squirrel unfortunantely escaped again and remained under a car for the remainder of the day.
