Talk:Mathematics
From Duke Wiki
We should make a "majors infobox" which allows us to list all of this important info concisely, and then allows us to talk about the substantive parts of the major.
I suppose I will do that if no one else wants to. --DuikiSysop 23:21, 3 August 2006 (MDT)
[edit] On Majors and Templates and Portals
Well...there is Template:Portal:Academics/Departments - the format is a little iffy (a template of a portal?) but still? Might make that into something for the majors? On the flip side, might decide just to link to the departmental websites since the requirements are annually fluid.
[edit] The deal with the Portals
Okay, so the deal with the portals is that I am not sure what a portal is actually supposed to be, so I have been treating it like an extended-feature page.
You can see a complete portal over at Portal:People. An almost-complete portal at Portal:Campus and a total unstarted portal at Portal:Academics.
It screws up the template schema to make templates into portable "pages" - yes, they should be separate, but since MediaWiki doesn't give us that opportunity, we are currently sharing functionality.
The templates that are attached to portal pages are designed to "import" a featured article of some kind, while the more traditional templates are infoboxes. As a style point, we could prefix all infobox-style templates with infobox: (i.e. template:infobox:example-box)
That might clear the confusion among multiple editors.

- Some information on portals is available via Wikipedia, specifically at Wikipedia:Portal. One really good one seems to be the Food Portal (not sure why I have been so focused on food for this wiki, but oh well). The difficulty there, though, is I *think* each component has to be constructed (i.e. no automatic generation of content, the way categories do). Most of which is to say I think the portals you have listed above are going in the right direction, it's just gonna take work to figure out what a Duiki Portal looks like. 10:30, 6 August 2006 (MDT)
