[edit] New News

So, the site continues to grow by leaps and bounds. If you can believe it, we have grown exponentially in terms of number-of-visitors in our first week on the net. That's right, on Friday over 300 visited, up from only 40 on Tuesday. This, I think, means that there is at least some demand for the content we could be presenting, specifically, information that will make Freshman introductions to campus easier. Straightforwardly, we know Duke's record when it comes to introducing kids to campus. I still meet Sophomores who can't tell me where the LSRC is (Sociology majors, gah!). Seriously though, I hope that if you are a visitor who does know about the campus that you try to contribute at least a page or two, or add to an existing page. If you run a student group, give it a page. If you think you are important, make yourself a page. Whatever. The point is, the more we add, the more we have the potential to enlighten.

So please, register. We only have 6 registered users thus far!

[edit] Old News

Ok, so the main page now automatically updates, can use google search function, and will soon stream newsfeeds from The Chronicle as well as outside organizations. I also plan to have it randomly feature articles on-the-fly.

Any other suggestions?"

[edit] RSS Piping

We can now Pipe RSS onto this and any page on the Wiki. The Chronicle News now transcludes to the Homepage.

  • OK - I'll ask. What the hell does transcludes mean? DukeEgr93 21:03, 18 July 2006 (MDT)
    • Continuing on, transcludes might mean "shoves the Chronicle links and the weather window WAY over to the left" DukeEgr93 21:07, 18 July 2006 (MDT)
  • From Wikipedia...
    • In computer science, transclusion is the inclusion of part of a document into another document by reference. Some hypertext systems, including Ted Nelson's Xanadu Project, support transclusion. For example, an article about a country might include a chart or a paragraph describing that country's agricultural exports from a different article about agriculture. Rather than copying the included data and storing it in two places, a transclusion embodies modular design, by allowing it to be stored only once (and perhaps corrected and updated if the link type supported that) and viewed in different contexts. The reference also serves to link both articles. --DuikiSysop 21:09, 18 July 2006 (MDT)
  • Yes, I have seen that as well. Am fixing...

[edit] Don't want to have to rewrite this

So, we have just begun "populating" (that means adding pages) and so we have some work ahead. But, I think once you get the hang of it, you'll agree, a wiki is much better than the facebook.

Please Don't Copy and Paste from other sources. Summarize pertinent data for buildings using templates, etc. And try and inject a personal touch where possible. This is, after all, the Duke Community's Wiki. Please see the Community Portal for more on our developing content policy. --DuikiSysop 22:32, 16 July 2006 (MDT)

[edit] The deal with RSS from within the site

So, I am never comfortable when I do not understand how something is/was fixed, but it seems that I have fixed the RSS feeds from within the site (AKA, new Pages feed and recent changes feed), so they work for now.

We'll see if they hold up.
