Southgate residence hall is home to approximately 150 First Year students on Duke’s East Campus. It is the most isolated of the East Campus dorms, on a twenty-foot mini-hill at the back of the backyard dorms, farthest from the Marketplace and the East Campus Bus Stop. Like all other halls on campus, Southgate is co-ed, with male residents on the second floor and female residents on the third. Southgate is staffed by one Graduate Assistant and six Resident Assistants under the supervision of Residence Coordinator Katie Yates. For more information or if you have any questions, please contact Residence Coordinator Katie Yates at katie.yates@duke.edu.

[edit] Inside the Dorm

Southgate has perhaps the best common room of any dorm, occupying three adjacent rooms which open into each other, creating a huge central social space. Southgate's isolation also contributes to the better-quality of its common rooms, with a fully functioning gamecube, big screen TV, and pool table. in the 2005/2006 year, a never-ending game of Super Smash Brothers continued for the bulk of the year, with the maximum number of players at all times of day. Only twenty feet away, and through a set of double doors, one could study in the large study room, or play pool in the game room on the opposite side.

Southgate also has some of the largest rooms on East with many over 240 square feet. This conributes to a very relaxed atmosphere in the dorm, with plenty of space for students to hang out in their rooms when they need privacy or time alone (this contrasts sharply with the relatively cramped arrangements in Blackwell and Randolph.

The Southgate Common Room is quite possibly the best of any dorm on campus. A never-ending game of Smash Brothers was played in front of the television here in '05-'06. This Photo: The game room.

Like many dorms on campus, Southgate is rather sparse, with drab white walls, which are plaster-and-wood much like in an older home. The dorm indeed, feels much different than the newer dorms, also because of its lack of air conditioning. Though warm and comfortable in winter, the first three-weeks of the year have been described as "torture."

The greatest drawback to Southgate resides in its isolation from the rest of the campus. Students from southgate use the Alternative East Campus Bus Stop because it is closer to their dorm. However, a feature of this bus stop is that full buses do not stop there if they have filled-up entirely at the main stop on East. This makes many Southgate students late to 8:30 AM classes on west early in the year.

Southgate is relatively close to ninth street, and walks to ninth, which become exponentially more prevalent later in the academic year, make it a very convenient location. Only Belltower is closer to ninth street. Southgate overlooks GA, Randolph, Belltower and Blackwell.

[edit] Faculty in Residence

The Faculty-in-Residence Program is one of the ways in which Duke University seeks to facilitate, strengthen, and expand interaction between faculty members and undergraduates beyond the classroom. The Southgate Faculty-in-Residence is Zbigniew Kabala, Associate Professor for Civil Engineering.

[edit] History

In its early days, Southgate was home to all engineering students[1]. Opening in 1921, the building was a gift from the citizens of Durham in memory of James H. Southgate, local businessman and Chairman of the Board of Trustees (notably at the time of the Bassett Affair.
