Living Cheaply

From Duke Wiki

Living cheaply can be hard to do on Duke's campus. After all, even a sandwich at Twinnies runs more than five dollars. Nevertheless, a few simple tips should help.

[edit] Buying Food and Goods

Avoid on-campus stores when you don't have food points. Prices are extremely inflated due to lack of competition. Prices of food will make you thing you're in a movie theater.

Surprisingly, Whole Foods actually has very good prices on many common items, such as cereals and frozen items. What makes things pricey is purchasing when purchasing extra premium items not available in typical grocery stores. Avoid these extras and stick to the "365" brandline sold by Whole Foods itself and you'll get very solid prices on everything else.

Some comparisons of items:

                          Whole Foods Uncle Harry's (central)

Uncle Sam Cereal-10oz $1.99 $3.55 Milk 1/2 gallon $1.86 (organic) $2.55 (non-organic)

Dollar General also has some extremely good deals on many typical items, though their selection of nutritious food is limited. You can buy nice ceramic bowls, plates, cups and mugs for between 50 cents to 2 dollars a piece. Frying pan with spatula? $3.

[edit] Dining Out

When having a night on the town, why go to some fancy restaurant like the Magnolia Grill or Washington Duke when a meal at Cosmic will suffice? There was never a care in the world that a cheese quesadilla and a corona couldn't cure.

[edit] Entertainment

Why take your date to a special night at Southpoint when you can stroll over to Perkins and pick up a Devil DVD like Jackass 2 or 24 - the complete first season? If you're willing to make the trek, a special experience can be had watching some of the classics over in Lilly and afterwards you can take your date to the Marketplace.

[edit] Dessert

A cherry coke and snickers can be found in any vending machine on campus.
