[edit] History
The Independent was founded in 1983 by Steve Schewel (T'73), partially to give a voice to the anti-nuclear movement as Carolina Power & Light pushed to build the Shearon Harris plant. The Independent became a weekly in 1989 when it began covering entertainment stories.
[edit] Duke Connections
In addition to Schewel, many Duke-affiliates have worked with or for the Independent Weekly. Barry Yeoman, for example, a long-time teacher at Duke Young Writers Camp and a frequent contributor to Duke Magazine, has written for The Independent since 1986.[2] Students additionally publish in its pages, such as Jeff Stern (T'07) in the cover story he wrote his junior year about three homeless men who live and work near and on Ninth Street.[3]
[edit] Where To Find It
Bins for The Independent are located in the LSRC, outside Alpine Bagels, in the Bryan Center, and all over Durham such as in Cosmic Cantina (and in outside bins such as across Perry Street from Cosmic).
