[edit] Inside the Dorm
Alspaugh dorm shares a number of features with its identical sister dorms on the main quad of East Campus. The dorm has three floors, with the first and second being coed (with separate male and female wings) and the third floor being female only. The third floor has a small study room which faces the main quad. Although the dorm does not have air conditioning, individual AC units can be requested by students. However, fans are only essential during the first and last few months of the year. Additionally, the heating system for the dorm works quite well during the winter. The first floor also has a common room and an adjacent study room, which mirrors that of Alspaugh's sister dorms. As of the 2008-2009 school year, the common room has been renovated and now has a flat-screen plasma TV, table tennis table, and fussball table.
The dorm was home to the Genome Revolution FOCUS cluster during the Fall of 2008.
[edit] Faculty in Residence
The Faculty-in-Residence Program is one of the ways in which Duke University seeks to facilitate, strengthen, and expand interaction between faculty members and undergraduates beyond the classroom. The Alspaugh Faculty-in-Residence is Robert Cook-Deegan, Director IGSP Center for Genome Ethics, Law, & Policy, Research Professor of Public Policy Studies, and Research Professor of Medicine.
[edit] History
Opening in 1927, the building was named for John W. Alspaugh (Normal College, 1855), a member of the committee of management that steered the Normal College (predecessor to Duke University) through financial troubles in the 1880s.
[edit] Neighborhood
Alspaugh is part of the East 1 Neighborhood along with Bassett, Brown, and Pegram residence halls.
