Alcohol

From Duke Wiki

Alcohol at Duke remains a contentious issue, with advocates and critics among the student body and administration alike.

East Campus is technically dry - if students are found drinking alcohol in their rooms on East, they will be written up and punished. West Campus is not dry, and many students choose to drink.

[edit] Where Students Get Alcohol

All of these establishments will only sell to students who are of legal drinking age (21).

  • The Armadillo Grill in the Bryan Center has a well-stocked bar.
  • Kroger on Hillsborough Road has a good selection of domestic and imported beers.
  • Sam's Quik Stop
  • Hard liquor must be purchased from a state-run Alcoholic Beverage Commission (ABC) store.
  • The Econ Department

[edit] Issues With Alcohol

Although most Duke students choose to drink responsibly, some do not.

  • Inebriated students often cause damage to Duke's property or property belonging to other students. For example, students often run through the wooden swing arms at the entrances to parking lots, and Duke must pay to send out a crew to replace them.
  • Drinking to excess is a serious health concern. In some cases, Duke EMS has had to be called to care for students who have consumed too much alcohol.
  • Drinking lowers inhibitions and can cause students to engage in dangerous behaviors or to do things that they later regret.
